The Gift That Had to Be Chosen
When the first humans were created, their souls were pure and in perfect harmony with God’s design. They reflected His goodness and were filled with natural love, compassion, and gentleness. Yet even in that perfection, they were still only in His image, not His essence.
The difference is subtle but deep. To be made in God’s image means to mirror His goodness and moral purity. To receive His essence means to share in His very nature. That could not be given automatically. It had to be desired, asked for, and received as the soul opened itself to Him.
God’s plan was not to make divine beings by command, but to invite His children into a partnership of love. The gift of His own Love would come only through free will, through longing hearts that turned toward Him in faith and prayer. Love must always be chosen; it can never be forced.
The first souls were given that opportunity, but they turned their attention instead to the world around them. They sought knowledge, mastery, and independence, believing these would make them wise. In doing so, they lost the chance to receive the one gift that could have made them divine in nature.
That loss was the true “fall” of humanity, not the eating of a literal fruit, but the turning away from the Source of Life. Yet the same choice still stands open to every soul today. We can reach for the same Love that was offered from the beginning, the Love that transforms the image of God within us into the living essence of God Himself, by opening our hearts in humble prayer and asking that His Love flow into our souls.
